The master plan was defined in conjunction with an interpretive plan developed by the Minnesota Historical Society to create an enhanced and expanded recreational destination for one of the State’s earliest and most important historic sites. Goals for the site include increasing tourism, expanding the site’s interpretive program and enhancing visitor amenities by  creating a facility that answers visitor needs at the Fort while enhancing their historic experience.  The 25-acre historic site includes a visitor’s center, walled fort, four military buildings and surrounding park and trails. The United States government built Fort Snelling in 1820 at the junction of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers. In 1960 the remaining original stone fort was declared Minnesota’s first National Historic Landmark.
